The new European Medicines Agency (EMA) is a 20 storied building in the heart of the business sector in Amsterdam, Located next to RAI rail and Metro stations. NSD were delighted to be awarded this £1million contract by VBH to detail, supply and install over 35,000 m2 of Metfloor 80 floor decking and shear studs.

Steel erection Works started on site late November 2018 giving less than 12 months for the building to be completed for the planned handover on 01/11/19. Decking installation works started on site on 27/11/18 with a completion date in June 2019.

Coming out of the ground works were slow on what was already a tight program. Following the Christmas break NSD returned to site early with VBH to try and pull back some lost time only to be hit with strong winds further delaying the progress. Everybody worked as and when they could with site remaining open until 11pm to try and gain any window of favourable weather available.

By early March we had completed 5 floors which brought us to level 3, there after the floor plate reduced in size as it extended up the core to level 19.

By the end of April works had been accelerating and time had been pulled back on the program.

By the 20th May the top of the building was within touching distance. With the glazing following close behind extra care was required as to not damage the glass panels

June 10th 2019, level 19 was completed. This high-rise building was completed in 28 weeks!

NSD Senior Contracts Manager (Carl Baxter) commented:

‘All this was made possible due to a good team effort from start to finish. The estimators getting the pricing right, an enormous amount of hard work going into the development of the drawings, followed by sometimes very difficult logistical co-ordination because of the location of the site. Site works were challenging due to the extremely tight program resulting in netting being carried out from a man basket at times, to working late when required and weekends’

This project was NSD’s first contract with the VBH collaboration and despite all the problems thrown at the site teams, we have managed to complete a mammoth task safely and on time.
